When you close an email account (Hotmail or Outlook), whether because you no longer need it or because it’s a duplicate account, or because of any other reason, Microsoft wants to make sure of two things:
- First, that it’s really you, not someone else trying to close your account because Microsoft takes security very seriously
- Second, you’re not leaving anything important behind that you might need later.
Before you close your email account
Closing an email account means you won’t be able to use it to log in to the other products and services being offered by Microsoft you’ve been using. It also permanently deletes all the services associated with it, including your:
- Saved data on OneDrive
- Xbox Live data and GamerTag
- Skype ID and all the contacts
- Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, and MSN email accounts
You can’t delete just one of these services and keep the others. It will delete the whole account and the services associated with it.
Steps to close a Microsoft account (Outlook|Hotmail).
Log-in to your Microsoft account and select manage account option from the top right corner, then click on protect your account under security.
It will give 4 option under security basics

A new page will come up by the name of ‘Additional security options‘ and the last option will be ‘Close your account‘
Click on Close your account to initiate the process which will take 60 days for the account closure.
In the meantime (60 days) if you log in to the account, the account gets reactivated and then you have to initiate the account closure request again and the 60 days time will start again.
